Scientists at Oregon State University, and now Baylor College of Medicine have discovered that a chemical compound in broccoli, cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables, stops most childhood Leukemia in its tracks. They used a concentrated and purified form of the compound Sulforaphane, which is found in these vegetables to demonstrate that it targets and kills the acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells, but doesn’t damage normal cells. It apparently uses multiple methods to do so.
Eating broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables is a very good thing to do apparently. These studies have shown that “sulforaphane has the ability to cause the death of leukemia cells via cell suicide (apoptosis), altering the cell cycle, and inhibiting a specific pathway. Thus broccoli may have a role in the fight against childhood leukemia.”
