Babylon and Burger King

by Steve Wohlberg

Before exposing Satan's strategic, masterfully planned, infernal efforts to destroy our health through nutritionally void, chemically saturated, and diabolically devitalized food, let's talk about "MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH" (Rev. 17:5).

The book of Revelation plainly informs us that "Babylon" is "a woman" (Rev. 17:3) who has "fallen" (Rev. 18:2) away from God. The fact that Scripture identifies this lady as "fallen" reveals that she was once pure, true, and upright, but no more. The reason for her fall from grace is that she slid into the treasonous crime of committing "fornication" with "the kings of the earth" (Rev. 17:2). The word, "fornication," means that a disastrous union has occurred. This "woman"-originally called to be the Bride of Christ-should have maintained a holy distance from earth's pompous "kings." But alas! She yielded to temptation, mingled with an apostate world, and merged with its evil ways. The term "Babylon" itself literally means "confusion"-which is ever the result of mixing the pure things of God with the corruptions of fallen man.

The underlying principle is described in this verse:

Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world(James 1:27, NKJV, emphasis added).

Notice carefully that on one side is "pure and undefiled religion," while on the other is "the world." In order for the "religion" to remain "pure...before God," it must keep itself "unspotted" from the flesh and the devil. But sadly, throughout Christian history (even to this day), compromise has occurred. In the time of Constantine (4th century), God's "woman" courted kings. In Old Testament times, a similar apostasy occurred when ancient Israel "committed harlotry with the Egyptians" (Ezek. 16:26) and "with the Assyrians" (verse 28).

All throughout, the basic process was the same. In Old Testament times, Israel mingled her divinely inspired religion with idolatrous neighbours. In New Testament times, the professed church of Jesus Christ did too. It mixed with the world. In the apocalypse, we see the result: "BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH" (Rev. 17:5).

From a prophetic standpoint, "Babylon the Great" represents a deadly mixture of religion with the world that is fatal to spiritual health.

Now, let's talk about food. How important is what we bite, sip, nibble, and snack on? The answer is: more important than we realize. No doubt you've heard the famous expression, "You are what you eat." It's true. What we place into our mouths, stomachs, and intestines is eventually transformed into our bones, blood, and brains. Are there reasons why heart attacks, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and autoimmune disease fatalities are skyrocketing? There must be."The curse causeless shall not come," wrote Solomon in Proverbs 26:2. Personally, I'm convinced that, behind the scenes, Lucifer and his legions are contributing to these fearful epidemics. Jesus said that Satan is "a murderer" (John 8:44). If we fail to see his deadly involvement in these tsunami-like waves of illness striking our society, then to me, we have become woefully "ignorant of his devices" (2 Cor. 2:11) and it is "high time to awake out of sleep" (Rom. 13:11).

Unfortunately, a large part of the problem is our food.

At the beginning of human history, God lovingly placed Adam and Eve in a beautiful "garden" called "Eden" (Gen. 2:8). "And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food" (Gen. 2:9). Notice carefully that last part, "good for food."God not only created man, but He also created food good for man to eat. Such food, freshly plucked from healthy plants thriving in nutrient-rich soil, was no doubt loaded with vitamins, minerals, living enzymes, amino acids, and essential fatty acids exquisitely designed to supply each of the 50-100 trillion cells inside Adam and Eve's newly created bodies with exactly what they needed for optimal health.

That was then-this is now.

"You've come a long way, baby," is another one of those famous phrases. Applied to humanity's departure from garden living, that phrase is both sad, and true. What has happened to our food supply? What about our drinking water? In Eden, "a river went out to water the garden" (Gen. 2:10) that needed no charcoal filtration, distillation, or reverse osmosis to remove deadly toxins.

Essentially-and this is the main point of this article-what happened to the "pure religion" of Old Testament Israel and New Testament Christianity when it mixed with "the world," has also happened to Planet Earth's food supply. Our sources of nutrition have been corrupted resulting in disastrous consequences to our health. Just like "Babylon the Great" committed "fornication" with "kings," the same might be said of "Burger King" and all fast-food chains. Yes, there are still traces of real "food" on their menus; but overall, the sandwiches, sodas, milkshakes, fries and treats have for all practical purposes committed "fornication" with toxic chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, solvents, additives, flavourings, preservatives, and colouring agents. From a health standpoint, such "fornication" has resulted in so much sickness that these global franchises might appropriately be renamed McDeath, Murder King, Jack n' the Casket, Crispy Grease, and KFC (Kidney Failure and Cancer).

It's the truth.

Sadly, most of what we eat today is no longer "good for food," but toxic and deadly. "Foods" which God created for us to eat are now being laced with poisonous chemicals. Therefore-in principle-what happened spiritually to ancient Israel and Christianity has also happened physically to our food. The bad has been mixed with the good. It's the same story, but from a different perspective.

It will either make you laugh or cry, but type in "Junk Food: McDonald's 4 Year Old Cheeseburger Video" into the search field on YouTube. The video is only five minutes and 23 seconds, but it can be life changing. When you watch it, you will see a four-year-old cheeseburger and French fries that haven't yet decomposed. Scary, isn't it?

In conclusion, I'm not writing this article to tell you what to eat. That's up to you. And please, don't misunderstand me, neither am I blaming you for every health problem you may have. And no, I also don't believe we can eat our way to heaven, for salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ, not food. But if we want to save ourselves from unnecessary bodily grief, pain, and from an early trip to a cemetery, we should all make serious efforts to eat more food that is as much as possible like God originally created it, rather than as Big Food, Big Sugar, Big Agriculture, and Big Chemical has changed it.

Here's one last thought. When Daniel was taken from Jerusalem to the palace of Babylon and offered rich dainties at King Nebuchadnezzar's royal table, he refused to eat them. "Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king's choice food or with the wine which he drank" (Daniel 1:8, NASB). Instead, Daniel and his friends chose a more simple, healthy diet of "vegetables to eat and water to drink" (verse 12). As a result, God blessed these young men with "knowledge and intelligence...wisdom and understanding...ten times better than all the magicians and conjurers" of Babylon (see Daniel 1:17, 20).

The lesson is for us.

So, the next time you go grocery shopping and have a choice between purchasing wholesome organic apples that grew on a real tree or a mass-produced and chemically saturated apple pie that may not decompose for fifty years, you might want to think twice about which to buy.

Remember, our loving Creator originally established what was "good for food" (Genesis 2:9) in the Garden of Eden.

The truth is, He knows what's best.
