Albania Wonders After… · May 10, 2012
“Benedict XVI and the president of Albania discussed Saturday the nation’s path to full integration in the European Union, as Bamir Topi visited the Pontiff at the Vatican.”
By discussing this issue with the pope, the Albanian president tacitly acknowledges that the pope has authority in terms of Europe’s future. Europe is in the process of resurrecting the Holy Roman Empire, in which the Catholic Church will pay a key role. The two men also discussed the economic crisis.
As is usual for state visits with the pope the Albanian leader also met with the papal secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States.
A Vatican communiqué said that “good relations that exist between the Holy See and the Republic of Albania.” The men discussed “questions of mutual interest regarding relations between the ecclesial and civil communities, including interreligious dialogue and the Church’s contribution in the fields of education and social care.”
