Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

SYMPTOMS – Some of the following: Learning disabilities. Lack of concentration. Easily distracted. Procrastination. Lack of goals. Cannot concentrate. Difficulty in solving problems. Impulsive and sloppy workmanship. Cannot manage time. Cannot remember sequences or events. Mood swings. Forgetfulness. Sleep disturbances. Loses things easily. Absentmindedness.

CAUSES – Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), are closely related. The difference is that ADD is a general foggy mindedness; whereas ADHD may not be foggy minded; but it is hyperactive and possibly disturbing to others. They have had multiple labels in the past, including hyperactivity and learning disability. Residual attention deficit disorder (RADD) is the name given to individuals, 18 or older, who have ADD. Boys are far more likely than girls to be classified as ADD or ADHD.

Many child experts believe there is no such thing as ADD or ADHD; abd that both “disorders” were invented to provide more employment to psychologists and psychiatrists.

Because many parents are frightened over the possibility that their child may have ADD or ADHD, when they take them for a checkup, they are frequently told that the child has a terrible disorder, called ADD or ADHD; and he needs to take drugs. Some of these drugs are dangerous.

Well then, what are the real causes of these problems? First, the symptoms for ADD and ADHD would apply to nearly every child in the world! Actually according to the symptoms, we all have ADD or ADHD! Should we then all start taking powerful mind-altering drugs?

Second, a frequent reason that many children today are overactive or absent-minded is our present “civilized” way of life. They eat lots of processed foods at home and lots of junk foods away from home. They ride long hours on school buses and sit in classrooms where teachers are not allowed to discipline. So children run wild, are not permitted to learn how to work (because of “child labour laws”), grow up on a vicious television dramas, and then go outside to learn about street drugs. In addition, many of them live in quarreling homes, alcoholic or street drug homes, or one-parent homes with no one home much of the time. Little wonder that the symptoms of ADD and ADHD are becoming epidemic.

The drug, prescribed by the physician or psychiatrist for ADD or ADHD is generally methylphenidate (sold under the brand name, Ritalin). This powerful chemical compound is so nearly identical to cocaine that the two are used interchangeably in medical research. Ritalin helps the child focus – by turning him into a narrow-brained robot. The drug destroys his curiosity, imagination, sociability, and vitality.

NATURAL REMEDIES

Basic

  • Many of the symptoms will be reduced when the child is given a nourishing diet, loving care, proper rest at night, and opportunity to do worthwile and appreciated work assignments, especially those that help someone else.
  • Believe in the child, listen to him, do things with him. Take time to be with him.
  • Feed the child a very nourishing diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, plus vitamin-mineral supplements and carrot juice.
  • There should be an orderly routine in the home, with duties he is in charge of (and warmly thanked for) each day. This imparts a sense of security and self-respect.

OTHER POINTS

  • Instead of Ritalin, each day give the child high-B complex, thiamine (25mg), vitamin B6 (100mg), pantothetic acid (50mg), folic acid (400 mcg), beta-carotene (in carrot juice), vitamin C (1,000mg), vitamin E (400 IU), calcium, (500-1,000mg), magnesium (100-400mg), and zinc (15mg). The calcium and magnesium will help calm him.
  • A diet of unsaturated fastty acids reduces ADD and ADHD. Give him 4 tsp. of flaxseed oil, daily.
  • Give him complex carbohydrates (whole grains) instead of simple sugar foods.
  • He might have a milk (or some other) food allergy. If a food makes him excitable, cut back on it a while and if that helps.
  • Eliminate all junk, sugary, processed, and fried foods from his diet. No more soft drinks of coffee.
  • Valerian root extract produces good results.
  • ADD and AFHD children often have an excess of heavy metals in their body. Take steps to identify and eliminate them.
  • I refer parents to Dr. William Crook’s book, Help for the Hyperactive Child (Professional Books) or any of the excellent books on ADD and hyperactivity written by Dr. Doris Rapp. Also Meridian Valley Clinical Laboratory (206-859-8700) and National Biotech Laboratory (800-846-6285) offer a food allergy test that measures both IgE abd IgC antibodies, tests for over 100 different foods which come with detailed dietary instrustions and is reasonably priced at about $20.”- Michael T. Murray, Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements, p. 427.

ENCOURAGEMENT – The blessing comes when by faith the soul surrenders itself to God. Then that power which no human eye can see creates a new being in the image of God.
