Babylon is Fallen

“And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” (Rev. 14: 8)

Who is Babylon?

(Revelation 17: 1-6) – “And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.”

Note: Rev. 17 describes the false woman - church = Babylon. A woman in Bible prophesy represents a church (Jeremiah 6:2).

Note that Babylon is described as having a golden cup in her hand and she is making the nations drunk with the Wine. Interestingly, during the last supper, Jesus not only gave the disciples bread, but he also gave them a cup. And he said, “This is the blood of my New Testament or covenant” (Mathew 26:28). Now what kind of grape juice did Jesus give his disciples? Unfermented wine. It was pure grape juice. It represented the pure teaching of his gospel. But what Babylon and her daughters are giving is a counterfeit version. This wine is fermented. It’s causing people to get drunk and forget something:

(Proverbs 31:3-5) – “Give not thy strength unto women , nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. It is not for kings to drink wine ; nor for princes strong drink: Lest they drink, and forget the law

Note: Babylon has a cup in her hand with wine which she’s giving to the world, and this cup or wine is a counterfeit to the covenant of Christ, which is the 10 commandments written in our hearts, and this cup that nations are drinking is designed to make people forget the law. What commandment begins with the word remember? The Sabbath. The wine that Babylon is giving the world is a counterfeit version of the gospel in the name of the cross of Christ; because of the cross, we keep Sunday. In fact, because of the cross we don’t have to keep the law of God. Bible says, these church systems are fallen!

(Rev. 18:1-3). “And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.”

The term "Babylon" is derived from "Babel," and signifies confusion. (Gen. 11: 9 quoted) The name of the city was Babel, because the Lord confused the languages of all the earth. And it is the same with the spiritual Babylon, since all the nations are confused because they have been made drunk with her wine. “All nations means that the nature of the apostasy is universal. The substitution of human laws for the laws of God and the enforcement of religious decrees by the state will become universal.

Let’s have a look at the ancient Babylon to see if we can learn where they went wrong, and if we can draw a lesson from it.

(Gen. 11:4) “And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”

This is describing the building of the city and the tower of Babel. God’s original plan called for men to spread over the face of the earth and to cultivate the soil (see ch. 1:28). The building of cities represented opposition to this plan. The concentration of human beings has always encouraged laziness, immorality, and other vices. Cities have always been hotbeds of crime, because Satan finds less resistance to his attacks in that environment, than in smaller communities where people live in close touch with nature.

Babylonians reasoned that building a city would give them security against attacks, and they built a tower, to escape another flood—which God had promised will never happen. If a structure higher than the mountains could be erected, men thought, they would be safe whatever God might do. They chose to forget that true security comes only in trusting and obeying God. They were trying to gain salvation by works. Obviously, only those who had forsaken God took part in these activities. From that day to this, Babylon has symbolized apostasy, arrogance, confusion, and a man-made salvation.

And what city is the opposite of Babylon?

(Rev. 21:10) “And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God”

Two ancient cities, Jerusalem and Babylon, are set in contrast in the Scriptures – Salem, meaning “peace,” and Babel, meaning “confusion.” One city (Jerusalem) became the centre of God’s earthly kingdom; the other (Babylon) became the centre of Satan’s earthly kingdom. In the New Testament, and especially in the Revelation, these cities represent two spiritual kingdoms.

Rev. 14:8 says, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen , because she made all nations drink” “Is fallen” is repeated twice, lest anyone should doubt the fact. The Three Angel’s messages begin to be proclaimed from 1844. With that in mind, what churches have fallen from 1844 onwards?

The Protestant churches have fallen spiritually by rejecting the First Angel’s message. Protestants, like the ancient Babel builders of old have turned away from the everlasting gospel to follow their own devising.

They have rejected;

  • Second Advent of Christ
  • Prophecies of Daniel and Revelation
  • Heavenly Sanctuary & Pre-Advent Judgment
  • Standards of Christian Conduct
  • The Ten Commandments, starting with the Fourth Commandment
  • Authority of the Bible as the Word of God

But at the same time, they clung to the error of the natural immortality of the soul, which is the basis of belief in spiritism. And the major churches began to accept the false theory of evolution, which reject the first ten chapters of Genesis.

Word,Made all nations drink” suggests that force is being used to make the nations accept the false teachings and policies of Babylon. Religious elements will bring pressure to bear upon the state to enforce their decrees.

“The wine Wine denotes doctrine or teaching. Intoxicating wine denotes false doctrine. In order for all nations to drink of the wine of Babylon, including non-Christian nations, there must be some false principle universally known and followed that is here being warned against.

What are Satan’s main deceptions, or “the wine” of Babylon? For this we will go back to the first deception, which happened in the Garden of Eden.

(Gen. 3:1-5) - “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”

In Eden, Satan met Eve at the tree with three points of deception: (1) you don’t have to keep God’s commandments. God said, don’t eat of the tree, but you don’t have to obey that! (2) If you eat, you won’t die. (3) If you eat it, you’ll become as God.

Here are three commonly held beliefs, all of which are contrary to God’s Word: (1) the breakdown of the Ten Commandments (especially the Sabbath commandment); (2) the widespread belief that the soul is immortal; and (3) salvation by works. May God help us to fortify ourselves against these three great deceptions of Satan.

Going back to Rev. 14:8, what is meant by “fornication”? In the religious sense it means the illicit connection between the church and the world or between the church and the state. The church should be married to her Lord, but when she seeks the support of the state, she leaves her lawful spouse. By her new connection she commits spiritual fornication.

But what does it mean by “the wrath of her fornication”?

(Rev. 12:17) – “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

When people assimilate the wine or doctrines of spiritual Babylon, it makes them wrathful and intolerant. They become intolerant of the truth and of people who hold to the truth.

She (Babylon) made all nations drink of the wine.

(Rev. 17:2) –With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”

This verse says that Mother church (V5) makes the inhabitants of the earth drunk with her wine. Through the centuries Rome has extended her cup of false doctrine to the nations. But today, apostate Protestantism is doing the same.

They have begun their downward spiral since 1844. Since then they have been infecting the world with her false teachings. They will keep sliding down, until they come to the place where they will be totally under the control of occult powers spoken of in Rev. 18. This is a sad picture, when we recall how mightily God has used each Protestant church in the past.

Of what is Babylon the mother?

(Rev. 17:5.) – And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”

In symbolic prophecy a woman is a church or a religious power. In this chapter we can see that Babylon is none other than the beast of Rev. 13. Verse 5 states that she has “daughter churches,” who like their mother drink the wine of tradition and man-made doctrine. As we have seen, these are Protestant churches, who failed to continue to walk in God’s Word as additional errors and traditions were uncovered.

Was there a time when Babylon of old made nations drunk with the wine of false worship?

(Jer. 50:38, 51:7.) – “A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols. (50:38) Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD'S hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad. (51:7)

The ancient Babylonians were “mad upon their idols” because they were drunken of her wine. They defied God and were overthrown, so also will modern Babylon meet her doom. Every unholy doctrine found in ancient Babylon – spiritism, sun worship, astrology, etc., can be found in modern Babylon.

What is God’s appeal to individuals in the spiritual Babylon?

(Rev. 18:4) – “And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.”

Because she is doomed, God is calling His people to separate from her. In 2Cor. 6:17,18, God is appealing to His people who are caught up in the doctrines of Babylon. He says; “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”
